At Bantam Industries, networking is a key part of our business plan. As such, we read many articles on different approaches that are designed to have a strong impact on our networking success. Some advice is very salient, while other advice is best left untouched. Here are three tips that we find aren’t so valuable:
- Don’t Attend Every Event: You are not obligated to accept every invitation you receive. Our Bantam Industries experts recommend that you focus on events from which you’ll get the most value. Consider the topics discussed and who the audience might be before you plan to attend.
- Don’t Try to Work the Entire Room: Another myth about networking is that it’s important to meet and talk to everyone there. Our Bantam Industries professionals propose that a better approach is to focus on quality over quantity. Be observant and identify individuals with whom you’re most likely to have a successful connection. In other words, hone in on people with whom you would have the best opportunity to build a true relationship. This is with whom you want to engage in a conversation.
- Don’t Focus as Much on First Impressions: Of course you want to make a strong first impression. However, it’s follow-through that matters most. After you make a connection, find ways to stay in touch. Perhaps send a LinkedIn invitation or an email on a topic.
Your networking efforts can be fruitful if you focus on quality, which these practices address.
